Youth Homelessness Matters Day (YHMD)

Youth Homelessness Matters Day is Wednesday 17 April 2024.

It’s a national day that was conceived in 1990 to raise awareness and public discussion about child and youth homelessness.

A day to start conversations about sustainable and innovative solutions for supporting the needs of young people experiencing homelessness.

Over the years, it has grown into a national celebration of young people’s resilience and an important day of advocacy for sustainable and innovative solutions to support the needs of children and young people at risk of or experiencing homelessness.

Did you know?

  • Nearly 600 Tasmanian children and young people aged 12-24 were recorded as being homeless on the last census night.
  • Young Tasmanians experience homelessness at a higher rate than any other state or territory in Australia except Victoria and the Northern Territory.
  • In 2021-22, over 1400 young Tasmanians aged 10-24 presented along, without a carer or guardian, to specialist homelessness services seeking help.
  • In 2021, 25% of people experiencing homelessness in Tasmania were children and young people aged 12-24 years.
  • Between the 2006 and 2021 censuses, Tasmania experienced by far the biggest increase in child and youth homelessness in the country (up 42.6%).

These statistics only scratch the surface of issues that young people experiencing homelessness face.

How can you make a difference?

Come along to our couch event!

This Youth Homelessness Matters Day, we’re partnering with Youth ARC, City of Hobart and the UTAS Homelessness ColLAB to join forces and ask the question, ‘Does youth homelessness matter in Tasmania?’

We’ll have some couches in the Elizabeth Street Mall that have been done up by young people from our youth accommodation services with help from Youth ARC. We’re not sure if they’ll be comfy but they’ll definitely be conversation starters.

While we already play a crucial role in delivering care for these children, we know more needs to be done. We’re calling for change.

We’re calling on the Australian Government to develop a standalone National Child and Youth Homelessness and Housing Strategy.

We need to ensure that our children and young people are safe, supported and given every opportunity to thrive. Ending child and youth homelessness will only be a reality if a clear, targeted and developmentally appropriate standalone Child and Youth Homelessness and Housing Strategy is created.

Help us end child and youth homelessness by signing the petition today.

Make a donation!

You can make a donation to Colony 47 where the money stays in Tasmania and goes directly towards helping Young Tasmanians to live a good life.

With donations we received, we can purchase food, help with housing supports and needs, rental subsidies, getting documents for employment and other requirements to help them find or keep safe and sustainable housing.

Without a safe place to stay, young Tasmanians cannot engage in education or keep employment. They are left vulnerable and need our support in whatever form that takes. Someone to talk to. A bed to sleep in. A hand with the rent.

Help us end youth homelessness.
